Why are we so harsh and blaming around homelessness

Members Lunch with Tony Keenan

Hosted by:

April 20, 2016 @ 10:30 pm - April 21, 2016 @ 12:00 am

What are Australians' perceptions and understandings of homelessness? Three national polls conducted since 2006 showi that Australians continue to attribute homelessness to individual factors (eg. bad choices) rather than any structural causes (eg. lack of opportunity, housing affordability). Other research examines whether there are structural drivers of homelessness and concludes overwhelmingly that there are.

Tony has served in many community and policy advisory roles, including as a member of the Australian National Council on AIDS and the Australian Social Inclusion Board. He has served as Chairperson of the Australian Foyer Foundation, President of the Victorian AIDS Council and National President of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations. He is a graduate of the Executive Masters in Public Administration at the Australian New Zealand School of Government (ANZOG) and was awarded a Harkness Fellowship in Public Policy to the University of California, San Francisco.

Launch Housing was formed through a merger of HomeGround Services and Hanover Welfare Services, where Tony was CEO of Hanover from 2006.

So why are we so harsh and blaming around homelessness? Come and talk to Tony and learn about this problem and how we can all help.
