What are issues for “Freedom of Religion” in our multicultural secular society?

Australians have legislated against discrimination at the federal level since 1975 with the Racial Discrimination Act and then we added the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, Disability Discrimination Act 1992, and the Age Discrimination Act 2004.

As a result, it is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of a number of protected attributes including age, disability, race, sex, intersex status, gender identity and sexual orientation in certain areas of public life.

In 2019 the government drafted the Religious Discrimination Bill to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religious belief. On the surface, this extension to protecting against religious discrimination seems fair enough.

On closer inspection, the draft bill appears to give protections to enable discrimination in the name of religious freedom.

What is this In-House event?

Historically the In-House Series are face-to-face events that draw on the diverse expertise of our members sharing their ideas and experiences on contemporary, complex or controversial topics. This event however, will take place on Zoom by invitation only.

Developed and moderated by members, under the Chatham-house Rule, instead of a guest speaker we learn from each other, challenge assumptions, spark new ideas or point the way for potential actions.

We continue to learn and share in the forum under Members Area on the website. This provides access to pre-event and post-event reading and discussions and where members (irrespective of attending the dinner) can share insights and comments on a range of subjects.
