The Grenfell Tower fire in West London in June 2017 was an absolute tragedy. The fire at the 24-storey Grenfell Towerblock of public housing flats caused at least 80 deaths and over 70 injuries.
Melbourne first experienced the danger of non-compliant cladding with the Lacrosse Building fire at Docklands in November 2014. More than 400 people were evacuated after a discarded cigarette on a balcony started a fire that very quickly spread up the face of the building. Fortunately no one was injured in that incident.
In July 2018, following Grenfell, the Victorian Government set up a bi-partisan Taskforce co-Chaired by Former Premier Ted Baillieu and Former Deputy Premier and Planning Minister John Thwaites. The Taskforce Chairs released their report on 1 December recommending a comprehensive audit of Victoria’s high rise buildings, government buildings and options for reform of Victoria’s building and fire safety laws. The Minister for Planning has since issued a guideline restricting the use of cladding to reduce the risks to life and property arising from the inappropriate use of cladding products in external wall systems in multi-storey buildings in Victoria.
Stan Krpan, undertook a secondment from his position as CEO of Sustainability Victoria, to take on the role as CEO for the Victorian Cladding Taskforce from July – December 2017.
