How the social innovation concept of pop-up housing was created over a cup of coffee

Hosted by:

October 9, 2018

It began in 2016 when he was having a coffee with his daughter Demi in Degraves Street when a person experiencing homelessness came up to them and asked for some money to pay for accommodation for the night.

Robert knew that something had to be done.

Having spent 30 years in commercial and residential development, Rob had the fortunate insight on how long it takes for building plans and permits to be accepted, and also how many buildings in the city were vacant for long periods of time.

If only those people sleeping rough could be sheltered in those empty buildings…

The first Pop-Up shelter in Melbourne was opened in July this year, hopefully the first of many. But this is only a temporary solution to Australia’s major problem of affordable housing.

Where do we go from here?
