COVID-19 In Victoria: the current status and future possibilities

Take a Lunch Break with Prof Benjamin Cowie

Hosted by:
Prof Ian Dunn AM

June 9, 2020 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

The impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on our lives has been profound.

With the sheer volume of news covering the situation in Australia and globally it is easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of just what the current status is. It is even more difficult to envisage what the future might hold.

One man perfectly positioned to update us on the current situation and provide an insight into living with COVID-19 in the months and years ahead is Professor Benjamin Cowie.

Professor Cowie is an infectious diseases physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and an epidemiologist with the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory and the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria.

He has been involved in the development of healthy public policy in relation to viral hepatitis in Australia and internationally and in 2015 was named the inaugural Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Viral Hepatitis at the Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne.

He serves on a range of communicable disease, clinical and public health committees at state, national and international levels.

Professor Cowie is regularly sought out by media to comment on specific issues surrounding COVID-19. As you would imagine, he has been following the situation intensely since the very early days of the outbreak in China.

He has been particularly vocal on the need to tailor health communication messages to culturally and linguistically diverse communities and the removal of social barriers for people seeking testing and treatment.

Join us at 12:30pm via Zoom as Professor Cowie outlines the current status and future possibilities for Victoria in relation to COVID-19. He will then open the floor to questions and lead what promises to be an enlightening discussion.
