Healthcare in crisis – is it time for a holistic approach to health provision?

Across the OECD, healthcare expenditure has been growing at two percentage points faster than GDP reaching close to 20% of GDP in the US and circa 12% in Australia.  Yet Covid has nearly brought the health system to its knees.  Is it time we had a rethink about healthcare provision with an increasing focus on health rather than sickness?

 Julie-Anne Mizzi, CEO and Managing Partner of Plenary Funds Management has been investing for over 30 years.  In her career, she created the largest brownfield PPP fund in Australia reaching $1.4bn which including assets such as the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) in Melbourne.  While at AMP, she was responsible for developing their health infrastructure platform investing in large privately owned aged and disability care operations in Australia and the UK.

Julie-Anne will discuss how we can reconsider the system to reduce the burden of chronic illnesses, provide greater dignity for end-of-life care, manage the rapidly rising mental health issues and associated societal costs while freeing up the physical health assets to deal with episodic care needs.  She will also open the debate on the use of private capital in conjunction with government funding to upgrade and modernise existing health infrastructure as well as deliver new facilities to meet future demand.  In addition, she will provide insights into alternative funding models, the use of health insurance and limitations in the Australian psyche to aged care financing.
