Confronting Australia’s declining physical and built environment
Members' Lunch with Prof Graeme Samuel AC
Hosted by:
Chris Gallagher
September 2, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
$80 – $95Can Australia’s environment recover from a state of decline and withstand increasing threats?
MF member Prof Graeme Samuel AC believes that Australia’s natural environment and iconic places are in an overall state of decline and are under increasing threat.
The State of the Environment Report, prepared for the previous Federal Government and recently released by the new Government, makes for some grim reading. As with past reports, it examines the state of Australia’s physical and built environment, but for the first time it also examines how our environment affects our health and wellbeing and it has included indigenous co-authors.
Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, has said that sweeping reform is required to address environmental decline and that she will introduce new environmental legislation next year. She has said she will properly consider Prof Samuel’s 2020 Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act which was commissioned by the previous Government.
Graeme says of his report that the “38 recommendations amount to substantial and necessary reforms to reverse the current state of environmental decline. They will enable Australia to meet future development needs in a sustainable way and will support long-term economic growth, environmental improvement and the effective protection of Australia’s iconic places and heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.”
Graeme will lead a discussion about the way forward.
