Redefining Public Sector Leadership

Drinks with Prof. Caron Beaton-Wells

Hosted by:
Dianne Jacobs

November 13 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

$45.00 – $50.00

Governments and public services across Australia are being challenged in unprecedented ways. Wicked problems abound, from climate change to artificial intelligence, from Closing the Gap to tectonic shifts in the geopolitical plates.

What will be required to ensure public services are fit for purpose, and ready to meet these challenges?

Leadership demands and capabilities are having to be reshaped, with higher expectations and different structures, systems and incentives, together with new frameworks for culture and accountabilities.

Will these efforts be sufficient and what can the public sector learn from leadership in the private sector context?

Uniquely positioned to lead this conversation is Melbourne Forum member Professor Caron Beaton-Wells, Dean and CEO at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government.

As an internationally distinguished academic leader, Caron is committed to the role of education and research for a sustainable future and with a track record in leading major organisational change through innovation and high performing, collaborative and inclusive culture.

Caron is an Honorary Professorial Fellow of the Melbourne Law School and a lay member of the Australian Competition Tribunal. She was formerly a member of the executive leadership team, holding successive Associate Deanships, at Melbourne Law School (ranked no. 1 in Australia and no. 5 in the world). She was former Dean, Internal of Melbourne Business School and a Professorial Fellow at the Melbourne Law School.

Her research and teaching have lain at the intersection of law, economics and business disciplines as they relate to competition in markets and the digital economy. She has been awarded substantial research funding and published extensively, contributing to the intellectual and public discourse around the world.

She has been a member of national and international editorial and advisory boards, consulted to the OECD, ASEAN, and the New Zealand Government, and been a non-governmental advisor to the International Competition Network, a member of UNCTAD’s Research Partnership Platform, and a member of the Law Council of Australia’s competition and consumer and small business committees.

Formerly a solicitor at (now) King & Wood Mallesons and a member of the Victorian Bar, practising in commercial and government law, Caron was the 2019 recipient of the Academic of the Year (Women in Law) Award.

Engage in this conversation for an enlightening and stimulating discussion on the future of  public service leadership.
