The Ben Roberts-Smith Case – the story from within

Lunch with Peter Bartlett

Hosted by:
Prof Ian Dunn AM

September 8, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

$80.00 – $95.00

For several decades Peter Bartlett, a partner at MinterEllison, has handled the defamation work for The Age, and more recently also SMH and 9 Network. During this time Peter has handled both a huge number and an extraordinary variety of matters.

But there has never been anything like the action brought by Australia’s most decorated soldier. Many months of hearings, delays caused by pandemic induced travel restrictions, witnesses in Afghanistan and the last moment loss of the Defence Senior Counsel due to a terminal illness. Ultimately there was a verdict for the Defendants and their great investigative journalists.

Throughout all of this Peter Bartlett directed the Defence, a case dubbed by the Australian Media as the “Defamation Trial of the Century.”

Peter’s account of this remarkable matter will offer compelling listening for those members, potential members and other guests interested in the juxtaposition of journalism and the law.
