Albert Einstein has often been (Incorrectly) quoted saying the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. However, this is what we’re doing with our cities. Our population will double over the next few of decades but our roads and trains are already congested, housing prices have skyrocketed in the inner areas, and our society is becoming more stratified by location. Governments will struggle to pay the cost of infrastructure already being built, but as we approach another election more and more new promises are being made for infrastructure that arguably won’t solve our problems.
Peter was recently made a Member of the Order of Australia for his career in urban and regional planning and design, public administration and Local Government. He has a portfolio of advisory roles with large private companies and State and Local Governments. Additionally he is actively involved in the discussion on the future of Australian cities and is currently completing a book which concentrates on new and smarter ways of growing our cities.
