As Melbourne and the State of Victoria transitions from old forms of energy to solar, wind, and other renewable energy technologies, we’re going to see a massive change in our visual landscape. This offers the perfect opportunity for designers to think creatively about how sustainable infrastructures are implemented. Can Melbourne’s public parks, waterfronts, and regeneration projects become more culturally vibrant places at the same time as they become a contributing part of our new energy landscape?

Robert Ferry and Elizabeth Monoian are the founding co-directors of the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI). They work with cities around the world on civic art installations that also function as renewable energy infrastructures.
Their publications include Regenerative Infrastructures (Prestel Publishing), The Time is Now: Public Art of the Sustainable City (Page One Publishing), New Energies (Prestel Publishing), Powering Places: LAGI Santa Monica, (Prestel Publishing), and A Field Guide to Renewable Energy Technologies.
Previous competitions have taken place in Dubai/Abu Dhabi (2010), New York City (2012), Copenhagen (2014), Glasgow (2015), Santa Monica (2016), and have brought in over 800 designs from 60+ countries.
By taking a public art and creative placemaking approach to community energy projects the Land Art Generator Initiative is pointing the way to a beautiful post carbon future, and LAGI 2018 Melbourne is setting a new standard of excellence for renewable energy design.
