The “lucky country”? Reinventing Australia

Prof Ian Lowe AO

Hosted by:

October 7, 2015 @ 11:30 pm - October 8, 2015 @ 1:00 am

When Donald Horne described Australia as 'a lucky country run mainly by second-rate people', he sounded warnings about our future. Today after fifty years of inaction those warnings are more urgent.

Ian Lowe AO, Emeritus Professor of Science, Technology and Society at Griffith University, believes it is possible to re-invent our nation as a lucky country, but it will require wise policies, concerted action and political commitment.

Ian directed Australia’s Commission for the Future in 1988, chaired the advisory council that produced the first independent national report on the state of the environment in 1996 and was President of the Australian Conservation Foundation from 2004 to 2014. He also holds adjunct appointments at two other universities.

He has filled a wide range of advisory roles in Australia, is author of 12 books and over 100 other publications, and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He has been a reviewer for several global environmental studies and in 2009 the International Academy of Sciences, Health and Ecology awarded him the Konrad Lorenz Gold Medal.
