Ian has spent more than 30 years working in the field of international development. The bulk of this time was spent with the United Nations as a career official and included multi-year assignments as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in China (with responsibilities also for Mongolia and North Korea), Viet Nam, Ghana, Rwanda and Papua New Guinea. He also spent seven years at UN Headquarters, New York, following his appointment as Director, Division of Human Resources. In this capacity he undertook many missions to countries where the UN operates.
Joseph is a frequent political affairs commentator in the Australian media, including on ABC Radio and Television, and he specialises in issues related to nuclear non-proliferation and counter-terrorism.
Born and raised in Chicago and a long-time resident of Australia, he has authored and co-authored 310 refereed publications including 75 books, monographs and chapters, 115 journal articles/entries and scholarly reviews, and 120 refereed proceedings.
