A Special Tour of Parliament House

Open Door series

Hosted by:
Chris Gallagher

February 20 @ 4:45 pm - 6:30 pm

Free

Facing the intersection of Spring and Bourke streets, the facade of Parliament House, with its sweeping steps, elegant lamps and grand colonnade, suggests solidity and strength.

A tour of the inside of Parliament House is a delight for anyone with an interest in architecture (new and old) and historically significant buildings, as well as the functioning of our Government.

However, appearances don’t always tell the full story and we will have two special guides who are very familiar with the workings of the building.

We are delighted that the visit will be hosted by STEVE DIMOPOULOS MP, MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT, MINISTER FOR TOURISM, SPORT AND MAJOR EVENTS, MINISTER FOR OUTDOOR RECREATION.

We will also be privileged to have the participation of ARCHITECT AND URBAN DESIGNER, PETER ELLIOTT AM, who led the design of the ‘sunken’ building extension and gardens at the rear of the heritage building. Peter will explain the design philosophy of this innovative extension which won the 2019 National Architecture Award for Public Architecture. Peter is one of Australia’s most outstanding practitioners and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious 2017 Gold Medal from the Australian Institute of Architects.

A dinner booking at a café or restaurant nearby (venue to be advised) will be made for anyone interested in staying on for more conversation and a casual meal (at own cost).
