The increasingly challenging ethical questions posed by Covid-19

MF Digital with Dr Simon Longstaff AO FCPA

Covid-19 raises an extraordinary number of challenging ethical questions for us as individuals and as part of a wider society. Many of these questions are coming into very sharp focus as talk of ‘opening up’ escalates.

How will we decide what is an acceptable level of deaths when we open up? How would we triage patients if the hospital system can’t cope – who matters most? Should we be ‘dobbing in’ lockdown rule’ breakers? Should we worry about doing a little ‘cheating’ ourselves? Should we tolerate having Australians stranded overseas? Should vaccinations be compulsory? And this list goes on and on.

We are very fortunate to be able to discuss the many challenges posed by Covid-19 with Dr Simon Longstaff AO FCPA, the Executive Director of the highly regarded Sydney based Ethics Centre.

Simon has been the Executive Director for 30 years, working across business, government and society. He has a PhD in philosophy from Cambridge University, is a Fellow of CPA Australia and of the Royal Society of NSW, and an Honorary Professor at ANU National Centre for Indigenous Studies. Simon was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2013.
