The impact of COVID-19 on universities and the path to recovery

MF Digital with Prof Iain Martin

Hosted by:
Justin Bokor

November 11, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

International education was Victoria’s single largest export sector in 2019, worth $13.7 billion and supporting around 79,000 jobs. Over 250,000 international students studied here in 2019, but by December last year that figure had more than halved due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Australia’s higher education sector, which had grown reliant on international student fees, has lost billions and responded by cutting jobs and subjects. With large numbers of international students not anticipated to return until the start of 2022, the impact of COVID-19 has forced universities to rethink business models.

Professor Iain Martin has been Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University since July 2019. As Deakin’s principal executive officer, he leads the university and determines its strategic and academic vision.

In May last yearProfessor Martin said the impact of the pandemic meant that decisions made over the next 18 months would shape Deakin University for a decade or more.

Join us for this Melbourne Forum lunch where Professor Martin will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on universities and the path to recovery.
